Russia wanted to take control of Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula however, Japan also had interests in these two places. This conflict was a problem. They were constantly fighting who gets what places. Which was a main cause for the war, however the action that caused the war was when japan attacked port Arthur. They attacked the Russians when they were asleep and without the formality of declaring war. This act angered the Russians and put them on edge. When the Russians accidentally shot and destroyed a British cargo ship out of fear and surprise, they had to avoid getting into a war with the British as well as the Japanese, they were then in debt to Britain further and wouldn't be able to get their aid in the war.

Battle of port arthur
The battle of port Arthur took place February 8th 1904. The Japanese came into port Arthur in the dead of night when the Russians were sleeping and fired two torpedoes into two Russian battleships. On the next day, the Japanese fired at Russian ships who had retreated to their ports. That same day, Japan took control of Korea's capital and declared war. With the Russian Fleet hidden within port Arthur behind the batteries, Japan attack Port Arthur itself. Sending soldiers and samurais onto the land. When Russia accidentally shot and destroyed a British cargo ship, almost starting a war with Britain, they surrendered to Japan. -Anthony Morgan
Conditions of the War.
in 1904 the Russo-Japanese War demolished Russia's military and nation. Russia was blinded by past victories and strength, discarding the problems that began to form in agriculture and industry.Putting aside these problems didn't help the fact that the people felt distant from the war. The war was fought deep in the eastern region of the country. The majority of the population lived hundreds of miles away from the war zone. Resident in Moscow and St. Petersburg were 7,500 miles from the war. Obviously the war was not popular in Russia. Russian citizens were not prepared for war in any way. It came like a slap in the face. knocking Russian citizens into the dirt. This lead to the outbreak of spontaneous patriotism.
The Russians had very poor strategy. Unlike the Japanese, Admiral Heihachiro the commander of the Japanese Combined fleet. Togo's fleet possessed four battleships and twenty seven cruisers, that's not including the large numbers of destroyers and torpedo ships he had at his beck and call. The shells used were highly explosive. They caused more damage to the "armor-piercing rounds" favored by the Russians. The Russians were convinced that the Japanese weren't naive enough to attack or fight back. They thought to much of themselves.
Not just the war was lost, many soldiers were injured, killed, or were reported missing during the war. The war was long and painful for Russia. The worst outcome of the war was the enormous issues in "government machinery". The war distracted the young bright minds of Russia causing them to lose sight of the desire to revolutionise. To invent better, bigger, and newer things.
The Russo- Japanese was progressed long enough for Russia to run out of ressorces. There wasnt enough medical supplies.
Outcome for Both countries.
Russia had a humiliating defeat against Japan. They had underestimated Japan, the defeat had lowered the confidence of Russia. The Japanese asked the U.S. president to sign The Treaty of Portsmouth was signed in September 5th, 1905. Russia soon recognized Korea as being part of the Japanese sphere of influence. For the Japanese deaths there is around 47,000 for combat, 27,000 for disease and 6,000 to 12,000 for the wounded.men. The total number for the Russians is about 40,000 to 70,00 deaths. In total for both countries is 130,000 to 170,000 dead men.
In effect Russia had experienced some revolution in 1905 after the war. The revolution was about mass political and social unrest throughout Russia. It led to a constitutional monarchy. Japan had some major changes. Not everyone was happy about the peace treaty, riots came about in the streets in Russia to prevent the revolution. The Japanese thought they were fighting a "just war" with Russian aggression. The Treaty of Portsmouth was the actual last event of the Russo-Japanese War.
